I Can't Have My Cake and Eat It, Too

Last week commenced my 'official' training year with a moderate block of workouts. It was only a 15.5hr week - relatively tame by most standards - but the rides made damn sure to get the most out of the time in the saddle. Some of the highlighted events were:

* Wednesday - 3.5hrs endurance + 53x15 big ring repeats up Angeles Crest. ouch.

* Saturday - 4hrs MTB endurance (ended up around 7000' of climbing)

Now sprinkle in a little bit of balls-out cyclocross racing on sunday morning and you've got yourself a deadly combination.

2hrs of easy endurance pace would have been just what the doctor ordered for a lazy sunday morning... but i had to do it the hard way. 45 minutes of death and pain whilst trying to convince myself that somehow - ohhh somehow - CX will improve my short speed and fast starts for mountain bike racing.

F that.

My legs felt like cement from the gun, and despite being 3rd wheel into the barriers and latching onto the early (and eventual) winner for 2 laps - i just couldn't give'r enough to make the top 3.

Luckily for me, the loamy dirt corners favored my MTB descending skillz (yea... with a 'Z') and i was able to ward off stronger riders to ride in for 4th place.

At least i had the satisfaction of seeing my MTB buddy, Bobby Langin Jr., convincingly take the win, as well as friend and training partner Roger Woton bust a move on some punk UCLA kid with 2 to go for second place. Bigups to those guys for making it look easy.

Now all i can do is wait to see if Chet will kick me off the team for my sub-par performance...
